Nato nel 1834 a Lowel (Stati-Uniti Massachusett) vive alternatamente a Londra e a Parigi.
È tipo d'artista veramente cosmopolita.
Nato in America da famiglia olandese passò la fanciullezza in Russia; poi fu ricondotto nel nuovo continente, e infine venne a Parigi, ove si allogò nello studio del Gleyres.
Con la sua pittura rende a meraviglia il lato suggestivo delle cose.
È ritrattista di grande valore e in questo genere ha usato largamente delle così dette «sinfonie», effetti pittorici tratti da un solo colore.
